Franz Xaver Swediauer (Steyt [Austria], 1748 – Parigi, 1824)
Nasce a Steyt il 24 marzo del 1748. Il padre, di origine svedese, gli insegna greco e latino quando è ancora bambino. Sua madre muore quando ha cinque anni e solo a tredici Swediauer inizia a frequentare la scuola, interessandosi in particolare di filosofia, fisica e matematica.
Nel 1772 si laurea a Vienna in medicina senza peraltro trascurare lo studio delle lingue moderne, sua grande passione. Il suo studio delle lingue europee trova un’applicazione pratica nella serie di traduzioni di testi di medicina che Swediauer pubblica lungo tutto il corso della sua carriera.
Nel 1775 si trasferisce a Londra dove inizia la sua carriera di medico di successo. Nel 1786 pubblica il Philosophical Dictionary, or the Opinions of Modern Philosophers on Metaphysical, Moral and Political subjects, in quattro volumi. Nel 1822 apparve una seconda edizione dell’opera – oggi molto rara – dal titolo The Philosophical Dictionary, comprising the opinions of all the best writers on moral, political and theological subjects. Di questa seconda edizione, in volume unico, se ne conserva una copia presso la British Library.
Nel 1789 lascia l’Inghilterra e si stabilisce a Parigi, dove, attratto dal clima della Rivoluzione, rimane per il resto della sua vita, diventando peraltro amico di Danton, che aveva incontrato in precedenza a Londra.
La sua vita si conclude a Parigi il 28 agosto 1824, all’età di 76 anni.Opere
